Business signs are an important part of advertising your business in your local area, and this includes directory signs. Directory signs can tell people where you are and what you do, but they also come with their own set of do’s and don’ts that you need to keep in mind when designing and putting them up at your place of business. Here are some do’s and don’ts to consider when it comes to directory signs.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do make sure to have your name, address, and phone number (and email address) on there. You want potential customers to be able to find you! Do consider adding directional signs as well so that you can get people from point A to point B with ease. If someone is driving around looking for you and they see a confusing sign, it might be enough of a turn-off for them to move on somewhere else! Do keep these signs fresh! Change out your ads every few months or so. This will help ensure that you are getting new business each time someone drives by. Do place your directory sign in an area where lots of people drive by regularly. This could include near schools, businesses, or at major intersections. Don’t put up more than one sign per property. It may seem like a good idea because it increases exposure, but having multiple signs just confuses things and makes it harder for people to figure out which location is yours. Also, some directories only allow you to list one location — so make sure that it’s your main store! Don’t use anything other than letters and numbers on your directory sign. Avoid symbols, images, and other characters — they aren’t allowed by most directories. Also, avoid putting punctuation marks after your business name — it isn’t necessary and looks strange.

What Are Some Different Types of Directory Signs?

There are two main types of directory signs, lettered signs, and alphabetic signs. Directory signs that include letters can display more information about a business than those that are lettered, but they are typically used in areas where large numbers of people need to find their way. Alphabetic directory signs often have directional arrows next to them to show people where a business is in relation to their current location. They can also include additional text, such as hours of operation or a phone number. Both types of directory signs usually stand on poles at eye level so that people can easily read them.

Other types include:

  • Digital Directories
  • Map directories
  • Post and Panel Directories
  • Monument Sign Directories.
