If you run or work in a business, you probably have heard the term ADA at least once or twice. Perhaps you’ve heard it in passing and thought little of it, but perhaps you also wondered what it stands for and what it means to your business.

ADA Signs
Every facility has to have ADA signage

What are ADA Signs

ADA signage is essential, and it’s the law. ADA-compliant signs make your company accessible to every person, regardless of their abilities or disabilities. They provide direction and safety information, and need to follow specific rules and regulations regarding placement, font size, and spacing. They need to be visible and legible, through visual, tactile, or braille, for people with hearing, visual, or other sensory disabilities.

ADA Requirements

According to ADA Title III, which addresses public accommodations and commercial facilities, no individual shall be discriminated against on the basis of disability in the full and equal enjoyment of goods, services, or facilities offered by a public accommodation. This means that any signage used at these locations must be accessible for everyone regardless of their ability level. What does that mean? It means you need to make sure your signs are readable from a distance. When designing your ADA signs, ensure they can be read from ten feet away. If someone needs assistance reading them, you may also want to consider adding braille as well as larger text for those with vision impairments. And it’s not just about making sure people can read your signs — you also have to make sure they understand what they say!

Incorporate Branding Into ADA-Compliant Signage

Once your ADA signs are compliant, there’s nothing that says you can’t add certain brand identifiers to make your ADA signs fall in line with your branding and signage strategy:

  1. Incorporate signature font
  2. Incorporate signature brand color
  3. Match the style of signs and materials to other branding
  4. Work with our visual graphics design team to customize ADA-compliant signage
